Then things you didn't know about Meryl Streep

1. When she buys her weekend groceries at the local store she signs her cheque in her real name - Mary Louise Gummer.

2. At high school she was a champion swimmer, a cheerleader and Homecoming Queen.

3. At Yale Drama School she put her aquatic talents to good use when she appeared with Sigourney Weaver in a production of Aristophanes' The Frogs in an Olympic size swimming pool.

4. Director Alan Pakula had already signed Polish star, Magda Vasaryova, to play the name part in Sophie's Choice, but Streep kept lobbying for it. She was cast and won an Oscar. Vasaryova was paid off and eventually left films for life as a diplomat, becoming an ambassador for her native country.

5. Dustin Hoffman wanted to cast his girlfriend, Kate Jackson, as his estranged wife in Kramer Vs Kramer but Charlie's Angels wouldn't release her from her contract. Streep has auditioned for the small part of the one-night-stand who, naked, meets the son in the corridor. She wouldn't have done it as she doesn't do nude. But her 15 minutes as Joanna Kramer won her an Oscar.

6. May 27th 2004 was proclaimed 'Meryl Streep Day' by the Borough President of Manhattan, Virginia Fields.

7. When her son, Henry, went to Glasgow University she would frequently fly over to see him. When she went food shopping for him in supermarkets she was not bothered by fans since nobody expected to see her in that situation.

8. After taking her daughter to see Mamma Mia in 2001 she wrote a note to the producer and cast saying: "I would love to know what it would be like to get up on the stage and be part of Mamma Mia."

9. In The Devil Wears Prada Meryl did not mix with the rest of the cast. "I was in a sort of self-induced bad mood all the time. When you're a controlling task- master, everything is not quite right. Generally you're dissatisfied and that state of being is not wholly enjoyable. So I found that I couldn't enter into this fun on the set because I felt it wouldn't help the dynamic if I immediately went over and was joking with Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway and Stanley Tucci. They all were always having a party in the corner and I just couldn't join in."

10. Her daughter, Grace Gummer, began her acting career in 2008 in The Sexual Neuroses of Our Parents as Dora who, after 10 years on tranquilizers, develops an insatiable sexual appetite which results in an unwanted pregnancy and grisly abortion.
